Men's 4s vs Oxted Outlaws
After the disappointment of a loss in the match we shan't mention, Purley arrived fresh from the Christmas break and with everything to play for against Oxted. The Outlaws had got the better of Purley in the first match of the season - a narrow 2-1 win in Oxted - and they looked confident and relaxed as they warmed up in cold but bright conditions.
The match started as it was to go on - a fast paced affair played in good spirits - and despite a good start, Oxted found their way on to the score sheet first. Purley came back and after a couple of short corners, Simon Van Pelt nudged in an errant shot/pass from yours truly. The flood lights took an early breather, prompting halftime to come a little sooner than planned and the teams went in level.
The second half started badly for Purley. It is not in my nature to criticise the umpires so I wont, but Oxted definitely got the benefit of a call and some admittedly quick thinking left them with an easy chance on goal which they made the most of.
Purley were fuming, but they turned their anger into a positive second half performance, with a dominant day on the left midfield from Miles turning the second half one sided. Some excellent short corner strikes from Tom Alexander turned and tide and by the time the dust had settled and the frost had started to set in, Purley came off with a well deserved 4-2 victory, a fitting result for some hard work, and a winning start to Oly Wenzel's captaincy
